The VPNmine VPN
VPNmine is a free, no-logs VPN service. Every app opens a WireGuard tunnel to a server VPNmine runs itself in one of 68 countries, so your network sees only encrypted traffic and the sites you visit see the server's address. No ads, no card, one account on every device. This page is the map: what it is, how it works, where to get it.
What a VPN is, in four questions
- What is a VPN?A VPN, short for virtual private network, is an encrypted connection between your device and a server run by a VPN provider. Your traffic travels inside that tunnel, so your own network and internet provider see only encrypted data going to one address, and the websites you visit see the server's IP address instead of yours.
- How does a VPN work? When you connect, the VPN app and a server exchange keys and open an encrypted tunnel between them. Every packet your device sends is encrypted, carried to the server, decrypted there and forwarded to its destination under the server's IP address. Replies come back the same way, so your network sees only encrypted traffic to one server.
- Is a VPN safe?A VPN is as safe as the company running it, because the tunnel moves your trust from your internet provider to the VPN provider. A provider that runs its own servers, states precisely what it logs, shows no ads and does not sell data is safe to use. One that is vague about any of those is the risk.
- Why should I use a VPN?Use a VPN when you are on a network you do not control, when you do not want your internet provider holding a record of what you browse, or when you need to appear to be in another country. Those are the three real reasons. A VPN does not make you anonymous or protect you from malware, so do not buy it for those.
How the VPNmine VPN works
Every desktop, mobile and TV app opens a WireGuard tunnel, encrypted with ChaCha20-Poly1305 and authenticated with Curve25519 keys, to a server VPNmine rents and configures itself. Your network and internet provider see one encrypted stream to one address; the sites you open see that server's address and country. DNS goes through the tunnel. The browser extension proxies through the same servers over HTTPS or SOCKS5, because an extension cannot open a tunnel.
- VPN encryptionEvery desktop, mobile and TV client opens a WireGuard tunnel encrypted with ChaCha20-Poly1305. The browser extension proxies through the same network over HTTPS or SOCKS5, because an extension cannot open a system-wide tunnel.
- IP and location changeTraffic leaves the tunnel from the server you picked, so every site you open sees that server's IP address and country instead of yours. Your own network and internet provider see only encrypted traffic to one VPNmine address.
- Multiple server locationsVPNmine runs its own WireGuard servers in 68 countries across the Americas, Europe, Asia Pacific, the Middle East and Africa. Pick one by hand or let the app choose the closest.
- Free locationsEvery location is open to every user at no cost. There are no ads in any of the apps and no payment details are asked for.
- Premium locationsThe premium server pool is part of the free tier today. A paid tier is planned once the network is bigger, and the apps will say so before anyone is charged.
