Why Jakarta
Indonesia is seventeen thousand islands and its internet is built accordingly: the Palapa Ring, completed in 2019, laid domestic fibre between them, and the international cables mostly come ashore in Jakarta and Batam, close enough to Singapore that the two cities are 15 to 25 ms apart. Jakarta is where the domestic networks meet, at the exchange run by the providers' association APJII, so it is the one place an Indonesian exit can be fast for the whole country and still a short hop from the region's biggest hub.
How Indonesia filters
The communications ministry, now Komdigi, maintains a national blocklist called Trust Positif that providers are required to apply, covering adult content, gambling and sites it deems to violate the law. Since 2020 online services above a certain size have had to register as electronic system operators or be blocked, which briefly took Steam, PayPal and others offline in July 2022 until they complied. The Personal Data Protection Law of 2022 came fully into force in 2024 and follows the European model, and the ITE law governs online offences and has been used against speech.
What this changes about your connection
With the tunnel up, your own provider sees encrypted traffic to one VPNmine address and cannot apply the blocklist to what it cannot see; the sites you open see the Jakarta server. That is a description of how network-level filtering works, not advice to break Indonesian law, which does not change because your route did.
