SOFIA ENDPOINT

Free VPN for Bulgaria

VPNmine's Sofia server gives any VPNmine app a Bulgarian IP address for free, over a WireGuard tunnel encrypted with ChaCha20-Poly1305. We record which server you used and when, never the sites, lookups or content. The closest EU address to Istanbul, and a natural exit for the whole of the Balkans.

What people use it for

  • An EU exit within 25 ms of Bucharest, Istanbul and Athens
  • Reach Bulgarian services and pricing while abroad
  • Encrypt everything you send over public and hotel Wi-Fi
  • Keep your browsing off the record your own provider holds

Estimated round trip

  • Bulgaria3-15 ms
  • Bucharest, Istanbul or Athens8-30 ms
  • Frankfurt or London30-55 ms

Estimates from route distance, not measurements. Your provider's routing decides the real figure, and our speed test measures it in about twenty seconds.

Why Sofia

Bulgaria sits on the land route between central Europe and Turkey, and Sofia is where its networks meet at BIX.BG, the national exchange. Like Romania it has dense, inexpensive fibre and a hosting industry that grew up around it, so a Sofia exit is fast domestically and well connected regionally: Bucharest is under 15 ms away, Istanbul and Athens under 30, and Frankfurt about 30 to 40 ms over the routes through Serbia and Hungary. It is the exit we would pick for the Balkans.

Retention, cut back by the courts

Bulgaria's Electronic Communications Act originally required providers to keep traffic data for a year. After the EU directive fell in 2014, the Constitutional Court annulled the Bulgarian provisions in 2015, and parliament replaced them with a narrower duty of six months, with access limited to specific serious offences and subject to court authorisation. The GDPR applies as in every member state, enforced by the Commission for Personal Data Protection. There is no filtering regime aimed at general web traffic and no restriction on VPN use.

What this changes about your connection

With the tunnel up, your provider sees encrypted traffic to one VPNmine address in Sofia and nothing about its contents; what it retains is a connection to that address, not the sites behind it. Sites see the Sofia server, which reads as Bulgaria and as the European Union. From Turkey it is one of the closest EU exits there is, which is worth knowing when a Turkish network is throttling or blocking something.

Confirm it rather than assume it

Connect to Sofia, then check what changed. Our IP checker shows the address and country sites now see. The DNS leak test shows whether your domain lookups are still going to your own provider, which is the most common way a tunnel protects less than it appears to. The WebRTC leak test catches the browser handing out your real address through an API the VPN never sees.

What we store while you are connected is the same in Bulgaria as everywhere else: which server the session used and when, and nothing about the traffic. The full list is in the privacy policy.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Bulgaria VPN questions

How do I get a Bulgarian IP address for free?

Install VPNmine on your desktop, phone, TV or browser, sign in, and choose Bulgaria from the server list. The app opens a WireGuard tunnel to our Sofia server, and every site you open afterwards sees that server's address instead of yours. No charge, no advertising and no card required.

Are VPNs legal in Bulgaria?

Yes. VPN use is lawful in Bulgaria for individuals and businesses, and there is no filtering regime that targets it. Bulgaria is an EU member state, so the GDPR applies, and its retention duty on providers is limited to six months of connection data with court-controlled access.

Is Sofia a good exit from Turkey?

One of the best. Istanbul to Sofia is roughly 15 to 25 ms over the land routes through Thrace, which is closer than any other EU capital. When a Turkish network is throttling a service, a Sofia exit puts you inside the EU with the least added latency.

Does a Bulgarian VPN server count as an EU IP address?

Yes. Bulgaria has been an EU member since 2007, so a site that checks whether you are in the European Union will treat the Sofia server as inside it. Whether a specific service behaves differently for Bulgaria than for, say, Germany is a question for that service, and worth testing.
