Why Kuala Lumpur
Kuala Lumpur and the Cyberjaya corridor south of it are where Malaysia's networks meet, at MyIX, and the international cables land on the peninsula's coasts at Mersing, Kuantan, Melaka and Penang. Singapore is only 8 to 15 ms away, which makes Kuala Lumpur the closest alternative exit to the region's biggest hub, and Jakarta, Bangkok and Ho Chi Minh City are all within about 40 ms. How Malaysia filters, and the DNS episode
The regulator MCMC can order providers to block sites under the Communications and Multimedia Act of 1998, and it does so for gambling, adult content and material it deems offensive under section 233. In September 2024 it directed providers to redirect all public DNS traffic to their own resolvers, so that the blocklist would apply even to people using Google's or Cloudflare's DNS, and withdrew the direction within days after a public outcry. From 2025 large social platforms need a licence to operate in the country. The Personal Data Protection Act of 2010 was strengthened in 2024.
What this changes about your connection
With the tunnel up, your provider sees encrypted traffic to one VPNmine address in Kuala Lumpur and cannot see or redirect your DNS lookups, because they travel inside the tunnel too.
