Why Prague
Prague's exchange NIX.CZ is one of the largest in central Europe, and the country's domain registry has an unusual record of building open infrastructure, from the Knot DNS software used around the world to the Turris routers. Prague sits in the middle of the map: Vienna and Berlin are 8 to 15 ms away, Frankfurt 10 to 20, Warsaw 15 to 20, Munich under 15. Czech fibre is fast and cheap, and the hosting industry around Prague is large for the size of the country.
Retention, cut back by the court
The Constitutional Court struck down the Czech data retention law in 2011, holding it disproportionate. Parliament re-enacted a narrower version in 2012 with a six-month period and stricter access rules, and that regime has survived subsequent challenges. The GDPR applies as elsewhere in the EU, enforced by the Office for Personal Data Protection, and there is no filtering regime beyond blocking of unlicensed gambling sites and, since 2022, Russian state media.
