How to set it up on a Chromecast
Check which Chromecast you have
If it came with a remote and shows its own home screen, it is a Chromecast with Google TV and can run apps. If it only mirrors what another device sends, it is a cast-only model and cannot.

When you cast from an app, the stick fetches the stream itself over its own connection, so a VPN on your phone changes nothing. Only screen mirroring rides through the phone's tunnel. For a cast-only stick, the honest fix is a Google TV or Android TV device that can run the app.

Why doesn't the VPN on my phone cover what I cast?
Because casting is a handoff, not a relay. When you cast from an app, your phone sends the stick a link and the stick fetches the stream itself, over its own connection, outside your phone's tunnel. Screen mirroring is the exception: the pixels genuinely come from the phone, so mirrored content does ride through the phone's VPN.
How do I tell which Chromecast I have?
A Chromecast with Google TV ships with a remote and shows its own home screen with apps. A cast-only Chromecast has no remote and shows nothing until another device casts to it. The model name on the box or in the Google Home app settles it.
