Why Bangkok
Bangkok is where Thailand's networks meet, at BKNIX and the exchanges run by the national operators, and it sits in the middle of mainland South-East Asia: Phnom Penh and Vientiane are within 30 ms, Ho Chi Minh City and Kuala Lumpur within 40, Singapore about 30 to 45. The international cables land on the southern coasts near Songkhla and Satun and on the Gulf near Cha-am, so Bangkok is a short terrestrial hop from all of them. For the region it is the exit with the fewest compromises.
What the Computer Crime Act requires
The Computer Crime Act of 2007, tightened in 2017, requires service providers to retain traffic data for at least 90 days, extendable to two years by order, and gives the digital ministry and the courts the power to block content. Thailand also has strict lèse-majesté provisions in its criminal code, and online posts have been prosecuted under them and under the Act itself. The Personal Data Protection Act came into force in 2022 and follows the European model for commercial data handling.
What this changes about your connection
With the tunnel up, your provider sees encrypted traffic to one VPNmine address in Bangkok, so what it retains under the Act is a connection to that address rather than the sites behind it. Sites see the Bangkok server. That is a description of how the network works, not advice to break Thai law, which applies to what you post regardless of the route it took.
