VPN for Kindle and Fire tablets

A Kindle e-reader cannot run a VPN: its software runs no third-party apps, and its browser is a side feature on a device built to download books over TLS. Amazon's Fire tablets can run VPN apps, but VPNmine is not on the Amazon Appstore yet — so today the honest answer for both is no.

The state of it, device by device

  1. Kindle e-readers: not possible

The e-reader software has no app runtime for a VPN to live in, from any provider. Its store traffic is already encrypted with TLS, and its experimental browser is not where anyone does their browsing.

  2. Fire tablets: possible, not published

Fire OS is Android underneath and runs VPN apps from the Amazon Appstore. VPNmine has no Appstore listing yet and publishes no APK for sideloading, so a Fire tablet is not covered today.

  3. Put the VPN where the browsing is

The phone, desktop and TV apps are live and free. If the Kindle is one device among several, the screens that carry your real browsing are already covered.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Kindle questions

Can you put a VPN on a Kindle?

Not on a Kindle e-reader — the software runs no third-party apps, so no provider's VPN can install there. Amazon's Fire tablets are a different machine: they run VPN apps from the Amazon Appstore, where VPNmine is not yet listed.

Does a Kindle e-reader even need a VPN?

Barely. It downloads books over TLS-encrypted connections and browses almost nothing. The privacy exposure on a Kindle is a fraction of a phone's, which is why no VPN provider supports the device — the software cannot run there, and there is little to protect.

When will VPNmine reach Fire tablets?

No date is promised. Fire OS is Android-based, so the distance from the existing Android app is short, but an unpublished listing is unavailable and this page says so. It will change the day an Amazon Appstore build ships.
