Not for the reason you need one on public Wi-Fi, because at home the network is yours. A VPN at home is worth it if you do not want your internet provider keeping a record of the sites you visit, if you need to appear to be in another country, or if you share the connection with people you do not fully trust. ISP records. Your provider can see and, in many countries must retain, the destinations of your traffic. A VPN reduces that record to one encrypted session.

Shared connections. On a flat-share or a landlord's Wi-Fi, the person who runs the router can see what you do. A VPN puts it out of reach.
Reasons it does not
It will not make your home Wi-Fi more secure — that is the router's password and firmware. It will not block malware or ads unless the provider adds a filter. And it costs a little speed and some battery on phones. If none of the three reasons above apply, turning it on at home is a preference, not a necessity.
