For a user anywhere between India and Australia, that usually makes it the fastest exit available even when a nearer country has one.
Why nearer is often slower in this region
Intra-Asian routing is frequently indirect. Traffic between two Southeast Asian countries commonly transits Singapore rather than going directly, because that is where the networks meet.
So a server in a neighbouring country may be reached by a path that goes through Singapore anyway, adding hops rather than saving them. Measuring rather than assuming is worth more here than in Europe, where dense terrestrial fibre makes geography a better predictor.

The legal environment
Singapore's Personal Data Protection Act governs the collection and use of personal data, with a regulator that enforces it. It is a modern data protection framework and it is not GDPR — the consent and legitimate interest structures differ, and enforcement is more oriented to organisational accountability than to individual rights litigation.
The Cybersecurity Act establishes obligations for operators of critical information infrastructure and gives the Cyber Security Agency powers to investigate incidents.
Content regulation exists and is applied through licensing and directions to service providers, aimed largely at specified categories of content rather than at general filtering.
The summary is a well-regulated jurisdiction with an active state role in network governance. That is a different profile from Europe rather than a worse one, and it is worth understanding rather than reducing to a colour on a map.
What it is good for
Regional connectivity. The strongest reason. Nothing else in Southeast Asia comes close for peering density.
Reaching regional services. Content delivery networks place capacity there, so a Singapore exit is often the shortest path to the regional edge.
Stability. Infrastructure is mature and power and network reliability are high.
What to be aware of
It is a small market with concentrated infrastructure. That is the source of its advantage and it means a small number of facilities matter a great deal.
Address reputation. Singapore hosting ranges are well known and heavily classified, so services that block datacentre addresses block them readily.
Practical advice
If you are in the region, test Singapore against your own country's server with the speed test. It wins often enough that it should be the first comparison rather than an afterthought.
If you are outside the region, there is rarely a reason to exit there unless you specifically need a regional origin.

Submarine cables and why they matter here
Almost all intercontinental internet traffic travels on submarine fibre, and Singapore sits at the junction of the routes connecting Europe and the Middle East to East Asia and Australia. Cables landing there include several of the highest-capacity systems in service.
That concentration is why the country punches so far above its size in network terms, and it is also a concentration risk: a cable fault in the region can reroute enormous volumes of traffic and produce latency changes visible from thousands of kilometres away. If a Singapore exit suddenly performs badly and nothing local has changed, a cable event is worth ruling out before blaming the server.
Virtual locations elsewhere in the region often land here
Several providers offering locations in smaller Southeast Asian markets, or in countries where hosting is legally awkward, actually run the hardware in Singapore and announce addresses registered elsewhere.
That is worth knowing when comparing locations: two entries in a dropdown may be the same machines. The latency check settles it — if a supposedly Indonesian server answers in the same time as the Singapore one, it is in Singapore.
Practical settings
Nothing special is required, though the long submarine paths in this region mean MTU issues surface slightly more often than on short terrestrial routes. If large transfers stall while small requests work, that is the first thing to adjust.
