Streaming proxy errors: what the codes actually mean

A proxy error means the service matched your exit address against a list of addresses it believes belong to VPNs and datacentres. It has not inspected your traffic and cannot: the tunnel is encrypted. It has recognised where the connection came from, which is a much simpler check.

Every major streaming service shows some version of "you appear to be using a proxy or unblocker". The wording varies, the mechanism does not, and it is worth understanding because the popular explanation is wrong.

What the service actually did

It looked at the address your connection came from and checked it against commercial databases that classify addresses. Those databases flag ranges as datacentre, hosting, proxy or VPN, and they are built from registry data, routing data and observed behaviour.

That is the whole check. It did not decrypt anything, because it cannot: the tunnel is encrypted end to end and the service is at the far end of it, seeing ordinary requests arriving from an ordinary address.

Three signals do most of the work:

  • The address belongs to a hosting provider. Residential connections and datacentre connections sit in different registered ranges, and a VPN server lives in a datacentre.
  • Too many accounts from one address. Hundreds of subscribers behind one exit address is not what a household looks like.
  • A mismatch between the address and the account. An account registered and billed in one country connecting from another, repeatedly.

What the error does not mean

  • It does not mean your traffic was read. It was not.
  • It does not mean the VPN failed. It worked; the destination recognised where it exited.
  • It does not mean anything is broken on your device.
  • It does not mean your account is at risk. Services block the stream, not the account, in the overwhelming majority of cases.

Why it happens even when you are not trying to change region

This is the case worth explaining, because it is the one that annoys people who were doing nothing unusual.

If you connect to a server in your own country to protect a connection on a café network, the exit address is still a datacentre address shared with other users. The classification does not know or care why you are there. So a completely ordinary privacy use hits the same block as a deliberate region change.

What actually helps

Connect to a server in your own country. Removes the mismatch signal, which is the strongest of the three, and often that is enough.

Try a different server in the same country. Address reputation is per-range, not per-provider, so a different exit may not be flagged.

Check what the service sees. Open what is my IP to confirm the exit country matches where your account is registered. A mismatch you did not intend — the client picking the fastest server rather than the nearest — is a common surprise.

Accept that some services will not work through any VPN. Several invest heavily in this and refresh their lists constantly. That is their decision to make about their own service.

What does not help

  • Changing DNS. This is not a DNS check.
  • Clearing cookies. It is not a cookie check.
  • Using Smart DNS instead. It moves the problem rather than solving it, and it encrypts nothing, so you lose the privacy benefit while keeping the detection risk.
  • Rapidly cycling servers. It looks exactly like the behaviour the detection is built to catch.

The part worth being honest about

Streaming services' terms generally say that you should access the service from the country your account belongs to, and that using tools to appear elsewhere is a breach. That is their contract with you, and a technical workaround does not change it.

The privacy use — protecting a connection on an untrusted network, in your own country — is a different thing entirely, and it is the case where hitting this error is genuinely just collateral damage from a blunt instrument.

If you only need the tunnel for other things

Split tunnelling, where the client supports it, lets the streaming app connect directly while everything else goes through the tunnel. That resolves the conflict without pretending to be anywhere, and it is the arrangement that matches what most people actually want: privacy from their network operator, and video that plays.

The server list shows which countries are available if you need to match your account's region rather than the nearest exit.
