Free VPN for the United States

VPNmine runs an OpenVPN server in New York that any VPNmine app can connect to for free. Traffic leaves the tunnel with a United States IP address, encrypted with AES on the way there. We record which server you used and when, and never the sites, lookups or content that passed through it.

What people use it for

  • Reach services that route or price by country from outside the United States
  • Encrypt everything you send over hotel, airport and conference Wi-Fi
  • Keep your browsing off the record your own internet provider holds
  • Test how a site behaves for a US visitor without leaving your desk

Estimated round trip

  • US East Coast5-20 ms
  • US West Coast65-80 ms
  • London or Amsterdam70-90 ms

Estimates from route distance, not measurements. Your provider's routing decides the real figure, and our speed test measures it in about twenty seconds.

Why New York rather than anywhere else in the US

The New York metro is one end of nearly every transatlantic cable in service, and the surrounding facilities in Manhattan and northern New Jersey are among the most densely peered buildings on the internet. That means a short path to Europe, a short path to most of the eastern United States, and direct connections to the large content networks instead of a hop through somebody else's backbone. For anything crossing the Atlantic it is usually the lowest-latency US exit available.

What a US exit does and does not get you

It changes which country a server thinks you are in, and it hides your traffic from your own network and internet provider. It does not defeat account-based identification: if you sign in, the service knows who you are regardless of the address. Large streaming platforms also flag address ranges registered to hosting companies, and every commercial VPN exit sits in one, so treat catalogue access as something to test rather than something to assume.

What the law requires here

There is no federal statute requiring a VPN provider in the United States to retain connection logs, which is why the practice varies so widely between providers and why the honest thing is to publish what you keep rather than claim a vague zero. The United States is a member of the Five Eyes intelligence-sharing arrangement, so a provider that holds records can be compelled to produce them. The defence against that is not keeping the records in the first place.

Confirm it rather than assume it

Connect to New York, then check what changed. Our IP checker shows the address and country sites now see. The DNS leak test shows whether your domain lookups are still going to your own provider, which is the most common way a tunnel protects less than it appears to. The WebRTC leak test catches the browser handing out your real address through an API the VPN never sees.

What we store while you are connected is the same in United States as everywhere else: which server the session used and when, and nothing about the traffic. The full list is in the privacy policy.

United States VPN questions

How do I get a US IP address for free?

Install VPNmine on your desktop, phone, TV or browser, sign in, and pick United States from the server list. The connection opens an OpenVPN tunnel to our New York server and every site you open from then on sees that server's address instead of yours. There is no charge, no advertising and no payment method required.

Will a US VPN server let me watch American streaming catalogues?

Sometimes, and no provider can honestly promise more. Streaming platforms maintain lists of address ranges registered to hosting companies and block or downgrade traffic from them, and every commercial VPN exit lives in such a range. Whether a given service works on a given day is a question of whose list is current. Test it rather than take anyone's word for it.

Is the United States a safe country to route a VPN through?

It depends on what you are protecting against. A US exit hides your traffic from your own network and internet provider, which is what most people actually need. It does not put your traffic beyond the reach of US legal process, and the United States is a Five Eyes member. What matters more than the flag is whether the provider holds records that can be demanded at all.

How fast is the New York server?

Fast enough that the path length matters more than the server. From the US East Coast expect roughly 5 to 20 ms of added latency; from western Europe roughly 70 to 90 ms, which is close to the physical floor for a transatlantic round trip. Encryption typically costs 10 to 30 percent of throughput. Our speed test measures your own connection both ways.
