Free VPN for Sweden

VPNmine runs an OpenVPN server in Stockholm that any VPNmine app can connect to for free. Traffic leaves the tunnel with a Swedish IP address, encrypted with AES on the way there. We record which server you used and when, and never the sites, lookups or content that passed through it.

What people use it for

  • Reach Swedish and Nordic services while you are abroad
  • Take the short path across Scandinavia and into the Baltic region
  • Encrypt everything you send over public, hotel and campus Wi-Fi
  • Keep your browsing off the record your own internet provider holds

Estimated round trip

  • Sweden and the Nordics5-25 ms
  • Central Europe25-45 ms
  • US East Coast95-120 ms

Estimates from route distance, not measurements. Your provider's routing decides the real figure, and our speed test measures it in about twenty seconds.

Why Stockholm

Netnod operates the Swedish exchange infrastructure and Stockholm is where Nordic networks meet each other and the rest of Europe. Sweden also has unusually good domestic fibre coverage, so paths inside the country are short and consistent. For anyone in Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark or the Baltics, Stockholm is normally the nearest exit on the list by a wide margin.

The honest note about Swedish privacy

Sweden has a strong reputation for digital rights, and it deserves part of it. It is also the country whose FRA law, in force since 2008, permits the National Defence Radio Establishment to intercept communications crossing the Swedish border on cable. Traffic entering or leaving Sweden is therefore in scope for signals intelligence by design. This is a good reason to care that the traffic is encrypted end to end and that nobody is storing a record of it, which is exactly the architecture here.

What this changes about your connection

With the tunnel up, your own provider sees an encrypted stream to one VPNmine address and nothing about what it carries, and sites see the Stockholm server rather than you. Interception of an encrypted tunnel yields the fact that a tunnel exists, not its contents. What no VPN changes is account-based identification: sign in to a service and it knows who you are regardless of the exit country.

Confirm it rather than assume it

Connect to Stockholm, then check what changed. Our IP checker shows the address and country sites now see. The DNS leak test shows whether your domain lookups are still going to your own provider, which is the most common way a tunnel protects less than it appears to. The WebRTC leak test catches the browser handing out your real address through an API the VPN never sees.

What we store while you are connected is the same in Sweden as everywhere else: which server the session used and when, and nothing about the traffic. The full list is in the privacy policy.

Sweden VPN questions

How do I get a Swedish IP address for free?

Install VPNmine on your desktop, phone, TV or browser, sign in, and choose Sweden from the server list. The app opens an OpenVPN tunnel to our Stockholm server and every site you open afterwards sees that address. No charge, no advertising and no card required.

Are VPNs legal in Sweden?

Yes. VPN use is lawful in Sweden and widespread. The tunnel changes where your traffic exits; it does not change which activities are lawful, and Swedish copyright enforcement applies regardless.

Is Sweden a good privacy jurisdiction for a VPN?

It is better than most and not the sanctuary it is sometimes described as. The FRA law has permitted interception of cross-border cable traffic since 2008, so anything entering or leaving Sweden is within scope for signals intelligence. That argues for encryption and for a provider that stores nothing, rather than for treating the flag on the server as the protection.

Which server should I use from Norway, Denmark or Finland?

Stockholm, in almost every case. Nordic networks interconnect there, so the round trip is usually well under 25 ms from anywhere in the region, against 25 to 45 ms for Frankfurt or Amsterdam. Try Frankfurt as a second option if your provider routes you oddly.
