Why Madrid
ESPANIX in Madrid is where Spanish networks meet, and Madrid is also the hinge for traffic between Iberia, north-west Africa and the cable systems running to Latin America. Without a local exit, Spanish traffic frequently detours through Paris or Frankfurt and pays twenty to thirty milliseconds for the trip. A Madrid server removes that detour for anyone in Spain or Portugal.
Spain's blocking has become notably aggressive
Spanish courts have granted LaLiga sweeping authority to have IP addresses blocked during football matches to suppress unlicensed streams, and because the blocks target shared addresses the collateral damage has been substantial: through 2025, entirely unrelated sites behind the same Cloudflare address ranges were repeatedly knocked offline for Spanish users on match days. This is one of the clearest live examples anywhere of network-level blocking hitting the wrong targets, and it means a Spanish exit can be less reliable at certain hours than the country's infrastructure would suggest.
What this changes about your connection
With the tunnel up, your own provider sees an encrypted stream to a single VPNmine address and nothing about its contents, and sites see the Madrid server rather than you. If you are in Spain and are running into match-day blocking, note that the fix is exiting from a different country, not from Madrid, since a Spanish exit is subject to Spanish blocking exactly as your home connection is.

Are VPNs legal in Spain?
Yes. VPN use is lawful in Spain and routine in business. The tunnel changes the route your traffic takes; it does not change what the law permits you to do.
Why do random sites break in Spain during football matches?
Because of how anti-piracy blocking is implemented. Spanish courts have allowed IP-level blocking during LaLiga matches, and the blocked addresses are frequently shared infrastructure such as Cloudflare ranges, so unrelated sites behind the same address disappear for Spanish users while a match is on. Exiting through another country avoids it; a Spanish exit does not, because it is subject to the same orders.
Should I use Madrid or Paris from Portugal?
Madrid, normally. It is the nearer exchange and avoids the northward detour, so expect roughly 5 to 20 ms from Iberia against 25 to 45 ms via France. Paris is the sensible fallback if your provider's routing to Madrid is poor, which our speed test will show in a couple of runs.
