Free VPN for the United Kingdom

VPNmine runs an OpenVPN server in London that any VPNmine app can connect to for free. Traffic leaves the tunnel with a United Kingdom IP address, encrypted with AES on the way there. We record which server you used and when, and never the sites, lookups or content that passed through it.

What people use it for

  • Reach UK services and pricing while you are travelling abroad
  • Encrypt everything you send over public and hotel Wi-Fi
  • Keep your browsing out of the connection records your ISP is required to hold
  • Check how a page behaves for a UK visitor without leaving your desk

Estimated round trip

  • United Kingdom5-15 ms
  • Western Europe15-30 ms
  • US East Coast70-90 ms

Estimates from route distance, not measurements. Your provider's routing decides the real figure, and our speed test measures it in about twenty seconds.

Why London

London Internet Exchange is one of the largest exchange points in the world by connected networks, and the Docklands facilities around it carry a very large share of everything that enters or leaves the United Kingdom. A London exit therefore reaches British networks in a few milliseconds and western Europe in tens of them, and it sits at the European end of the transatlantic cables rather than behind another country's backbone.

How the UK filters the web

Two systems shape what a British connection can reach. Court-ordered blocking, implemented by the major ISPs through the filtering infrastructure originally built as Cleanfeed, removes named sites at the network level. Separately, the Online Safety Act made age assurance enforceable during 2025, so a growing number of sites now demand identity or age verification from UK visitors specifically. Both are applied by the network you are on, which is why the country you exit from changes what you see.

What the law requires here

The Investigatory Powers Act 2016 lets the Home Office require communications providers to retain connection data for up to twelve months, and it created the framework for bulk interception that the same Act governs. The practical consequence for anyone reading this is simple: the records that exist are the records that can be demanded. VPNmine keeps which server a session used and when, because abuse handling needs it, and does not keep browsing history, DNS queries or traffic content, so there is nothing further to produce.

Confirm it rather than assume it

Connect to London, then check what changed. Our IP checker shows the address and country sites now see. The DNS leak test shows whether your domain lookups are still going to your own provider, which is the most common way a tunnel protects less than it appears to. The WebRTC leak test catches the browser handing out your real address through an API the VPN never sees.

What we store while you are connected is the same in United Kingdom as everywhere else: which server the session used and when, and nothing about the traffic. The full list is in the privacy policy.

[COMMON_QUESTIONS]

United Kingdom VPN questions

How do I get a UK IP address for free?

Install VPNmine on your desktop, phone, TV or browser, sign in, and choose United Kingdom from the server list. The app opens an OpenVPN tunnel to our London server, and every site you open afterwards sees that server's address rather than yours. No charge, no advertising and no card details.

Are VPNs legal in the United Kingdom?

Yes. Using a VPN is lawful in the UK, and businesses rely on them daily. What remains unlawful is unlawful regardless of the tunnel: a VPN changes the route your traffic takes, not what you are permitted to do with it.

Will a UK server get around age verification?

It changes which country the site thinks you are in, so a site that only checks UK visitors will treat you as though you are elsewhere. That is a description of how geographic checks work, not advice to misrepresent your age, and any site that verifies identity at the account level rather than by address is unaffected.

Does my UK internet provider still see what I browse?

No. With the tunnel up, your provider sees encrypted traffic to a single VPNmine address and nothing about its contents. It can still see how much you sent and when. Note that this only holds if your DNS lookups go through the tunnel too, which is worth confirming with the DNS leak test rather than assuming.
