Free VPN for Italy

VPNmine runs an OpenVPN server in Milan that any VPNmine app can connect to for free. Traffic leaves the tunnel with an Italian IP address, encrypted with AES on the way there. We record which server you used and when, and never the sites, lookups or content that passed through it.

What people use it for

  • Reach Italian services and pricing while you are abroad
  • Take a short path into the central Mediterranean rather than routing via Frankfurt
  • Encrypt everything you send over public, hotel and holiday-rental Wi-Fi
  • Keep your browsing off the record your own internet provider holds

Estimated round trip

  • Northern Italy5-15 ms
  • Central Europe15-35 ms
  • US East Coast100-125 ms

Estimates from route distance, not measurements. Your provider's routing decides the real figure, and our speed test measures it in about twenty seconds.

Why Milan

MIX in Milan is Italy's main internet exchange and the point where Italian networks meet the rest of Europe, with well-provisioned links north through Switzerland and Austria and west through France. Milan also anchors the northern end of the Mediterranean cable systems that run down the peninsula and on toward North Africa and the Middle East. For anyone in Italy it is the shortest exit by a wide margin.

Piracy Shield, and why Italian blocking is unusual

Italy operates the most automated blocking system in Europe. Piracy Shield, run under AGCOM and live since February 2024, requires network operators to block reported addresses and domains within thirty minutes of a report, with no prior judicial review of each entry. The predictable happened: the system has repeatedly blocked shared infrastructure, including Cloudflare address ranges and, in one incident, Google Drive, cutting off large numbers of unrelated services for Italian users. It is the reason an Italian exit can behave unpredictably in ways that have nothing to do with your VPN.

What this changes about your connection

With the tunnel up, your own provider sees encrypted traffic to a single VPNmine address, and sites see the Milan server rather than you. If a site is unreachable from Italy because of a Piracy Shield entry, exiting through Italy will not help, because the block is applied on Italian networks. Exiting through Switzerland, France or Germany routes around it.

Confirm it rather than assume it

Connect to Milan, then check what changed. Our IP checker shows the address and country sites now see. The DNS leak test shows whether your domain lookups are still going to your own provider, which is the most common way a tunnel protects less than it appears to. The WebRTC leak test catches the browser handing out your real address through an API the VPN never sees.

What we store while you are connected is the same in Italy as everywhere else: which server the session used and when, and nothing about the traffic. The full list is in the privacy policy.

Italy VPN questions

How do I get an Italian IP address for free?

Install VPNmine on your desktop, phone, TV or browser, sign in, and choose Italy from the server list. The app opens an OpenVPN tunnel to our Milan server and every site you open afterwards sees that address instead of yours. No charge, no advertising and no card details.

Are VPNs legal in Italy?

Yes. VPN use is lawful in Italy and standard in business. A tunnel changes how traffic is routed, not which activities are lawful, and AGCOM enforcement applies to the conduct regardless of the route.

Why do unrelated sites stop working on Italian connections?

Piracy Shield. Since February 2024 Italian operators must block reported addresses within thirty minutes, without individual judicial review, and reports have repeatedly named shared infrastructure. Cloudflare ranges and even Google Drive have been caught by it, taking unrelated services offline for Italian users. Exiting through another country avoids the block; an Italian exit does not.

Milan or Zurich from northern Italy?

Milan for anything Italian and for the lowest latency, typically 5 to 15 ms. Zurich is the better choice when you want to route around Italian network-level blocking, and it is usually only 10 to 20 ms further. Both are far closer than Frankfurt for the peninsula.
