Why Paris
France-IX and the Paris data centre cluster sit at a genuine crossroads: north to the UK and Benelux, east to Germany and Switzerland, south to Spain and Italy, and onward to the Mediterranean cable systems that carry traffic to North Africa and the Middle East. For anyone in western or southern Europe, Paris is usually within twenty to thirty milliseconds, and it is often the better exit than Frankfurt for the Iberian peninsula.
What French networks are required to block
France operates one of the most active blocking regimes in Europe. ARCOM, the media and digital regulator, obtains and administers orders that require French ISPs to block piracy and unlicensed sports-streaming sites, in some cases dynamically while a match is being played. Separately, the SREN law's age-verification requirements for adult sites led several large platforms to withdraw from the French market rather than implement them during 2025. Both are enforced by the network, so what a connection can reach depends on which country it exits from.
What this changes about your connection
With the tunnel up, your own provider sees encrypted traffic to a single VPNmine address and nothing about its contents, and sites see the Paris server instead of you. It does not change anything tied to an account rather than an address, and it does not make otherwise unlawful activity lawful. What it reliably does is keep the network you happen to be using out of your browsing.

How do I get a French IP address for free?

Are VPNs legal in France?
Yes. VPN use is lawful in France and standard in business. A tunnel changes how your traffic is routed; it does not change which activities are lawful, and copyright enforcement under the Hadopi framework and its successor applies regardless.
Why can I reach a site from Paris that my own country blocks, or the reverse?
Because network-level blocking is applied by the internet provider you are connected through, not by the site. When you exit through a different country, you are subject to that country's blocking instead of your own. France blocks a substantial list of piracy and sports-streaming sites through ARCOM orders, so a French exit can be more restrictive than the one you started on, not less.
Does the Paris server slow my connection down?
